Deep Powder, MobileMe, a metal detector and my iPhone

image
Yesterday I lost my iPhone in deep snow at 8800 feet elevation while skiing. I dug around some of the likely spots right away but could not find it - I had been up the lift a few times and down several runs. I drove home (45 minutes) and logged into MobileMe. It was able to find the phone at that elevation! I installed Find My iPhone on my wife’s iPhone 4 and used it to get to the right location on the mountain but could not find my phone digging with gloves. This morning I tried again in the area pinpointed by MobileMe but used a metal detector and found it! I put it in a bag of rice for a while and it turned on just fine.
